In January, 2011, E-Tech Chief Scientist Ann Maest and Director Richard Kamp responded to a request from the Prefect (elected leader) of the Province of Zamora Chinchipe to identify the potential environmental effects of two proposed large-scale metal mines and, to a lesser extent, of artisenal mining throughout the province.

We visited with federal regulators, indigenous leaders, conservation groups and environmental organizations focused on mining, and we had lengthy meetings with mining companies Ecuacorrientes (Chinese) and Kinross (Canadian) over their mining projects. The latter meetings included lengthy site visits and meeting with technical staff working in Quito and at the mining sites. At the request of the environmental ministry, we also submitted technical comments on the exploitation and beneficiation Environmental Impact Studies for permits for the Ecuacorrientes open-pit copper mine in the Cordillera del Condor in the Ecuador-Peru border region.
